Getting to stay home with my kids has always been my dream job. But constantly having to keep up with the housework that goes along with being home all day rarely feels like a dream job. It can be very monotonous and tiresome cleaning up after little ones day after day. Keeping up with laundry, doing dishes, vacuuming up crumbs and wiping up spills is a never ending job.
After a while being a stay at home mom can drive you crazy with the constant chores that need to be done. Nothing ever stays clean for long! Most days it seems like as soon as I get one mess cleaned up, I turn around and there’s another mess that’s been created.
The constant need to clean never ends. It can really wear you down after a while. You start to resent all the work that you need to do in order to keep your home running smoothly. And that can really put you in a bad mood.
So how does one keep from getting burned out with all the cleaning and work that needs to be done at home?
I’ve spent so much time dreading chores and grumbling about the work I have to do, but I’ve finally come to enjoy (or at least tolerate) most of the housework. Here’s how I turned things around.

Change your perspective
This is the key that I’ve found to keep chores from feeling so draining. It’s all in how you view the work you need to do. Perspective is everything. If you see housework as something that you have to do, then it’s probably going to be something you dislike.
Instead of letting myself think of the chores I need to do as something I have to do, I look at it as something I get to do. I get to wash dishes because my family is well fed. I get to wash and fold laundry because my family has clothes to wear. I try to always remember the reason why I have these chores in the first place.
See the difference? The chores that I have are actually blessings in a way. Once I started thinking about them in that way, the work became much easier and I felt thankful for the cleaning that I was doing instead of irritated.
This has made the biggest difference for me. Not just for cleaning, but for everything. The reason I even have housework to do is because I have a house and a family that I love. So in a way, the work that needs to be done is a blessing. By focusing on my blessings and on being thankful for all that I have, I’m not thinking about cleaning in a negative way.
Make housework fun
“In every job that must be done, there is an element of fun. You find the fun and ‘snap,’ the job’s a game.” – Mary Poppins.
I can’t even count the many times my mom quoted this line when I was growing up. If you can find the fun in whatever chore you need to do, it won’t feel like work!
One of my favorite ways to make housework fun is to time myself to see how fast I can get something done, like clearing the table or folding a load of laundry. The next time I do that same chore, I’ll see if I can beat my time. I’m pretty competitive, even with myself, so this is a fun way for me to get things done.
Cleaning doesn’t have to be a drag, just focus on the aspects that you enjoy and make housework into a game.
Put on upbeat music
This is along the same lines as “make it fun”. Having music on that I love to listen to makes cleaning way better.
I used to turn on a movie or TV show while cleaning, but I would always become too engrossed in watching TV and wouldn’t get anything done. Music, on the other hand, really helps to get me moving.
Just dance your way to a clean home and get things done! I love doing this so much. Listening to some great music takes my mind off of the fact that I’m doing chores that I might not particularly enjoy. Instead, I’m just having fun listening to my favorite songs.
Bonus!! If you dance to the music, you’re getting in a great work out AND making your house clean. It’s a win, win.
Love your space
I definitely feel more like keeping my house clean and tidy when I like the way it looks. Now, I’m not talking about a big renovation project in order to make your house into a home you love, although that’s great if you can afford it! Sometimes just putting some fresh flowers out on your dining room table can freshen up your home and make you feel more willing to clean up. Or you can get some new decor to make things feel a bit more cozy and welcoming.
You don’t have to break the bank. But making your home into a place you love will make keeping it clean something that you enjoy to do (or at least something you don’t hate too much 😉 )
One thing that always makes me happy and makes me want to clean is lighting a nice smelling candle. When your house smells good, you’ll probably want to make it look good too.
Housework doesn’t have to be a bad thing! I mean, the work has to be done anyway. Why not enjoy it? It’s totally possible! By changing the way you look at it, you can have fun doing housework.
What do you do to make housework more enjoyable?
